The Abrasive Threat of Fly Ash
In coal or biomass thermal power plants, the flue gas is heavily laden with abrasive fly ash. If this gas stream is routed directly into a pulse-jet baghouse, the high velocity of the sharp particulate will cause severe interstitial abrasion, shredding the fabric filter media within weeks. Cyclone dust collectors are deployed as mandatory pre-filtration spark-arrestors.
Centrifugal Drop-Out and Apex Wear
The cyclone uses extreme centrifugal force to strip out the heaviest, most destructive ash particles (typically 10 microns and larger) before the gas reaches the delicate baghouse. Because the cyclone's lower cone (the apex) takes the brunt of this abrasive sliding friction, heavy-duty industrial cyclones are often lined with replaceable cast-iron or ceramic wear plates to maintain aerodynamic geometry.
